Thermal monitoring systems are an effective way of pinpointing issues in industrial environments before they progress into problems. Continuous heat monitoring can facilitate incisive process optimization, timely preventative maintenance, and quick identification of safety issues.

In terms of wavelength, infrared (IR) light lies just beyond the visible spectrum of light. While the human eye can see light with wavelengths up to around 750 nm, infrared light has wavelengths between 760 nm to 1 mm.

Though invisible, this range of the electromagnetic spectrum contains information considered to be extremely useful: all objects emit infrared light, and to establish the intensity of this infrared glow, the object’s temperature must be observed.

If it was possible to see infrared light, it would be possible to determine the temperature of objects just by looking at them.

This is the foundation of the logic on which infrared cameras are built. Infrared cameras, or thermal cameras, are devices that have the capacity to ‘see’ in infrared. This gives them the ability to observe the temperature of any object within their field of view.

Seeing the infrared spectrum provides major advantages when situated in industrial environments. Thermal imaging cameras enable the identification of a range of safety-critical or process-critical from their telltale thermal emissions.

For instance, such devices can determine if processes are running too hot (or too cold), if the equipment is overheating or if a conduit is leaking.

This not only facilitates the enhancement of process optimization and equipment maintenance but can also significantly improve safety by giving warnings or alarms in response to fire hazards.

In hazardous environments, heat monitoring is especially valuable when there is an explosion risk.

In such environments, the IND Thermal can be utilized to monitor storage, bunkers, or open areas to identify overheating and hotspots before they hit hazardous levels and thus trigger early fire warning systems before fires occur.

Many alarms or automated feedback can be set to automatically trigger in response to certain heat monitoring parameters to avoid fires or explosions.

The small-footprint of the IND Thermal makes it well-suited to embedded and inline applications. Embedded intelligence (EDGE processing) enables onboard data processing and local feedback loops to significantly reduce the necessity for external computation.

Direct feedback from the sensor can be employed to raise alarms and activate events or emergency stops. These outputs can also be utilized as direct inputs to PLCs or relays in the event of an alarm situation.
